Paul’s closing words to this church reveal his deep bond with them. As the church which he loved so much, he opens his heart to make it clear that his prayer for them is to know the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ as the supreme good.

Our position in Christ calls and obligates us to have the mind of Christ, to be as selfless as he was for the sake of and service to others.

The “mind of Christ” is powerfully portrayed for us in his humiliation and in receiving the name above all names as the one to be worshiped. We will give him this worship by coming to His Table.

Christian maturity eagerly reaches forward to the full hope of glory that Christ by his resurrection has provided for us.

In this pericope Paul speaks of his affirmed faith to the Philippians. While trials and difficulties may attempt to weaken our faith, Paul finds the opposite. The work of the gospel goes forward even in difficulty, and in that he finds joy and an affirmed faith in the purposes of God.

While realistically aware of the tensions and conflicts that can mar the community of Christ, Paul calls them to stand firm and rise to the joy and peace that Christ intends for his body in the world.

Paul, in prison, gives testimony to his own sense of contentment in God’s care.
