Grief is an ever-present reality in ministry, and church leaders play a crucial role in caring for people who are suffering. John Swinton and Isaac Wardell will lead this week-long summer seminar intended for pastors, worship leaders, and others whose work focuses on grief counseling, end-of-life care, and trauma. We will examine the role of scripture, prayer, music, and ritual in supporting individuals and communities walking through journeys of trauma, mourning, and healing. We will discuss how cultural and contextual diversity shapes individual and communal expressions of grief and how our cultural and ecclesiological differences can inform the discovery of existing rituals and practices as well as shape original worship resources. We will also collaborate to create prayers, songs, and liturgies that may be used by churches walking through grief.
This seminar involves extensive conversation, personal reflection, and hands-on activities. Our daily rhythm will include morning classroom time with afternoons set aside for rest, reflection, and writing. The week will also include a public service of lament at a local church in which we will embody some of the practices we’ve discussed.
This seminar will be offered at no cost to selected participants. Space is limited. All meals and lodging will be provided. Course readings will be sent to participants in advance of the seminar week. Participants are responsible for the cost of travel to and from the seminar.
